Tekno Autosport’s Nathan Morcom has had a stint in a different type of driver’s seat at Sydney Motorsport Park last week, assisting the Tekno Autosport’s Supercar Team at their Sponsor Ride Day.

After a 4th place finish in the Australian GT Endurance Championship, Morcom swapped seats with Supercar Driver Will Davison for 25 laps.

Morcom fell into the driver’s seat after talks with Team Tekno Owner Jonathon Webb about his interest in the category.

“I WAS JUST TALKING TO JONNO WEBB AND SUPERCARS INTERESTS ME, THE COMPETITION IS TOUGH AND THROUGH THE ROOF. IT’S AUSTRALIA’S LEADING CATEGORY SO THAT WAS THE MAIN REASON I WANTED TO JUMP BEHIND THE WHEEL IN THE FIRST PLACE.”

The Supercar drive was a first for Morcom, who had previously not sat in the driver’s seat in one of its kind.

“I WAS THROWN IN THE DEEP END WITH A PASSENGER IN THE CAR FOR MY FIRST RIDE, BUT TO GET GOING STRAIGHT AWAY OUT OF THE BOX WAS GOOD.”

The GT Driver found the Supercar different to his normal drive, but quickly picked up the technique with ease.

“ITS A FAIR BIT DIFFERENT, IT DOESN’T HAVE THAT AERO SO YOU CAN’T DRIVE INTO CORNERS REALLY QUICK, YOU HAVE TO BRAKE EARLY AND MANHANDLE THE CAR A BIT.”

“IN THAT INSTANCE SURPRISINGLY YOU HAD TO DRIVE IT AROUND TO THROW IT AROUND A LOT MORE THAN I THOUGHT YOU WOULD TO GET A GOOD LAP OUT OF IT, BUT IT WAS DEFINITELY REWARDING WHEN YOU DID.”

Morcom also had the opportunity to ride with valued sponsors from Direct Plasterboard Outlet, including his father, for a hot lap around Sydney Motorsport Park.

Keen for more laps in a Supercar, Morcom will look towards the future at the conclusion of both GT Endurance and Sprint Series.

“DEFINITELY ENJOYED IT, I LOOK FORWARD TO MORE TIME IN A SUPERCAR, KEEN TO DOING SOME MORE LAPS IN ONE. IN THE FUTURE TRYING TO GET A DRIVE IN THE ENDUROS WOULD BE GREAT, I’LL FOCUS ON THE GT SEASON BUT TO EXPAND MORE WOULD BE GREAT.”

For now, Morcom will focus Round 3 of the Australian GT Endurance Championship at Hampton Downs on October 28-30 and the GT Sprint Championship title decider at Highlands Motorsport Park, New Zealand on November 11-12.
