Tekno Autosport’s Nathan Morcom has claimed the Australian GT Endurance Championship alongside Grant Denyer, and finished third in the Sprint Championship at the Highlands 101 over the weekend.
Sprint Race 1 – Excluded
Morcom began the weekend qualifying in 5th for the first 60 minute Race, starting in front of rival Championship contender Klark Quinn.
Racing throughout the field, Morcom was in second place behind Quinn before attempting a pass which caused contact at the Turn 11 hairpin.
Morcom crossed the finish line first, but a Post Race Stewards Hearing excluded him from the race.
“WE WERE RULED OUT OF RACE 1 AFTER A CLASH TODAY AND IT WAS A SHAME ABOUT THE RULING BUT WE ARE ALL GOING FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, SO NO REGRETS AND IF YOU DON’T TRY YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO KNOW.”
Sprint Race 2 – Position 7
With both Morcom and Quinn starting Race 2 from the rear of the field, the title fight was reset.
Morcom moved into the Top 10 within Laps, but a hit from another in the field broke the McLaren’s diffuser in half.
Leading before the compulsory pit stop, Morcom then dropped to P7 where he concluded the Race.
Morcom’s P7 finish and a points count back meant he took out 3rd in the Sprint Championship Category in his maiden year.
“I TRIED MY HARDEST AND WENT FROM LAST TO FIRST BEFORE THE PITSTOP BUT A BUMP EARLY IN THE RACE BROKE OUR DIFFUSER IN HALF WHICH COST US SPEED.”
Endurance Race 1 – Position 8
Sunday’s Endurance Race saw Morcom partner with Grant Denyer for the final Race of the season.
Struggling with the McLaren, the car overheated ran in limp mode since Lap 5 of the Race.
Morcom put in the drive of his life in a wounded car that was overheating, using too much fuel and almost ran out of fuel to bring the duo home in P8.
The result cemented the Morcom & Denyer Team as the winners of Australian GT Endurance Championship.
“THE LAST FEW LAPS WHERE WE NEEDED TO SAVE FUEL WAS THE HARDEST BECAUSE WE WERE ALREADY SLOW ON PACE WITH NO MOTOR SO WE HAD TO DO A FUEL AND DASH BUT WE GOT THERE IN THE END.”
Morcom has the highest of thanks for this Sponsors, Family, Friends & Fans for their support over the Australian GT Sprint & Endurance Seasons.
“I COULDN’T ASK FOR ANYTHING BETTER IN MY FIRST YEAR, TO FINISH 3RD IN THE SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP IS AWESOME AND OVER THE MOON TO CLAIM MY FIRST AUSTRALIAN GT ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP IS UNREAL. IT’S TEKNO AUTOSPORTS FIRST YEAR SO THEY ARE RAPT TOO, A HUGE THANKS TO DIRECT PLASTERBOARD OUTLET, TEKNO, MCLAREN, RONDO, SEVENFRIDAY & CSR FOR ALL THE SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.”
