Team Direct Plasterboard Outlet Tekno Autosport’s Nathan Morcom has claimed a podium race win and the round overall at Barbagallo Raceway over the weekend for Round 3 of the 2016 Australian GT Championship.
The Practice round for the Australian GT’s was uneventful for the Tekno driver, with two red flags putting a stop to any real race time.
The Western Australian weather varied through the day, and Morcom completed Qualifying 1 in P13 after struggling with the wet and drying track.
“I MADE THE ERROR OF NOT COMING IN SOON ENOUGH FOR SLICKS, SO WE MISSED THE TYRE TEMPERATURE WE NEEDED TO FINISH IN THE TOP 5.”
Morcom familiarised with the field throughout Qualifying 2 and claimed P3 in the wet.
“I FINALLY CAME TO GRIPS WITH THE TRACK AND THE CAR WENT REALLY WELL WE SO ENDED UP JUST BEHIND CANTO AND WEBB.”
Race 1 – Position 2
Morcom quickly climbed from P13 in Race 1 to the front of the field on a drying track, as he overtook a series of competitors.
The Direct Plasterboard Outlet Tekno Autosport Racing Team gambled with their pit stop, changing to slicks late which paid off as Morcom shot to P5.
“I MANAGED TO HOLD OFF CANTO AND MARSHALL FOR 2ND PLACE BUT STRUGGLED WITH THE REAR GRIP SO I DIDN’T QUITE GET TO THE FRONT.”
Race 2 – Position 6
Race 2 saw Morcom start in P2 following a wet qualifying session, but after attempting to beat pole at corner one he dropped back to P3.
“I WAS ON THE TAIL END OF FIRST PLACE, THEN THE RED FLAG STOPPED THE RACE AFTER LARGE ACCIDENT BUT THE RESTART LEAD ADVANTAGE DISAPPEARED.”
“A COUPLE OF MID PACK CHARGERS HAD NEW TYRES ON AND PASSED ME IN THE LATER STAGES AS MY SETUP WAS USING MORE REAR TYRES THEN I’D LIKE, BUT THERE WAS A COUPLE OF GOOD BATTLES AT THE END.”
Morcom crossed the line in 4th, but additional Controlled Pitstop Time was added onto Morcom’s time demoting him to P6.
The combination of P2 and P6 finishes was enough for the Tekno racer to take out the round win at Barbagallo.
“IT’S MY FIRST EVER ROUND WIN IN AUSTRALIAN GT AND I’M WRAPPED TO SAY THE LEAST, IT’S MY FIRST FULL SEASON IN THE SERIES AND I’M NOW SITTING SECOND.”
Morcom and Team Direct Plasterboard Outlet Tekno Autosports will now prepare for Round 4 of the Australian GT Championship at the Phillip Island on May 27-28.
“I’M EXCITED FOR PHILLIP ISLAND AND CAN’T WAIT TO JUMP BACK IN THE TEKNO AUTOSPORTS MCLAREN 650S, IT’S A TRACK I KNOW WELL AND LOVE GOING THERE WHENEVER I GET A CHANCE TO RACE.”
